3 Days Left!

I am keeping registration open in The Music Hub until the end of May. After that, it won't reopen until September.

That means you have 3 days left to register!

Summer is a casual time meant for exploring. It's a great time to try something new or revisit a hobby!

One very important thing to know about learning piano is that it is not just an intellectual skill.

It's more like learning a sport.

Like golf, a sport many people take up when they get older.

Understanding the rules of golf, knowing the steps of swinging the club, and learning the strategy of where to send the ball might help you enjoy watching golf more on TV.

But those things alone won't help you in actually playing the game.

Learning to play golf requires physical engagement, and it takes time and practice to get all the aspects of bodily movements coordinated.

The same is true for piano.

Piano is extremely physical. It requires independent finger movement, wrist movement and foot movement (when using the pedal) that are very different from most of the movement required in the rest of life.

In today's world, the closest we come to using fingers independently outside of playing an instrument is typing. And in that case, we use one very compact keyboard. and our hands are always in the same general location.

The piano keyboard is far larger, with infinitely more combinations of notes and fingers, and the distance between our hands varies.

At whatever age we start learning piano, we are beginning to train our muscles to do something different and move in ways contrary to what is "normal" on a day-to-day basis.

Movement is a process of neurons firing and sending impulses down the nerves to make the muscles move. For this to happen quickly, that path needs to be reinforced through lots of repetition until it becomes automatic.

So that, eventually, when your mind thinks, "LH 2nd finger play now " your LH 2nd finger plays right away. Not your 3rd or 4th or 5th finger. Not with a long delay.

I think of practicing as "engraving" this path of impulses, like creating a ditch where you want water to flow.

It takes time. So, this is not something you want to put off.

In a variation of the quote about planting trees, the best time to start piano was 20 years ago. The second-best time is today.

Registration for The Music Hub is now open!

Inside, I explain movement around the piano in depth. And starting in June, I will be adding to a new module all about "Scales and Chords" which will not only help you improve finger dexterity but will also help you innately feel the geography of the piano.

You can become a monthly member or, you can pay for the year in full and receive 4 FREE (30 min.) private online lessons with me to use throughout the year - a $150 value!

Notes from The Music Hub July 13, 2026 What Are Primary Chords? I'm back! I did not send out an email last week because I was traveling to two conferences. In the last few weekly emails, I have been talking about the new module in The Music Hub on Scales & Chords. Chords are derived from scales. Each scale provides a set of notes which can be stacked to create different qualities of chords. In Lesson 3 of this module, I teach the Primary Chords. What are Primary Chords, and why do they have...

Notes from The Music Hub June 29, 2026 What is the Circle of 5ths? I have taught music theory to high school students and college students, as well as to my private students for a long time. And one of the most useful tools is the Circle of 5ths. The Circle of 5ths is a graphic representation of all the keys organized around a circle like the hours on a clock. There are secret hints hidden within the circle that help you to know exactly how many sharps and flats are in each key and what they...

It feels like the beginning of June was forever ago. I have mostly been plugging away at composing and dreading July 1. July 1 is the deadline for many things. I have to have all my syllabi finished and submitted. There are several Calls for Scores to submit to. I also leave on July 2 to head out to the National Association of Teachers of Singing National Conference, then the next weekend to the International Double Reeds Society National Conference. Getting ready for that trip is an ordeal....
