Heather Niemi Savage Music May 2026 Newsletter

The weather has been crazy here in NC. Every county in the state has been in an extreme or severe drought for some time, with water use restrictions everywhere.

Well, the rain finally came. It started Thursday and has only stopped periodically. Last night, some places near us got 6-7 inches of rain in 3 hours. The ground cannot absorb that much rain quickly, so of course there has been flooding and road damage in some places hit by Helene, and in some new places too. I saw a pic of a collapsed road in Hickory where a culvert failed.

The rain is supposed to continue this whole week, but Friday looks like a dry day and I'm supposed to be getting outside with a friend. We'll have to be careful where we go because the water will still be high and fast, and there are creeks and rivers along most hikes.

For me, this month has been very full. You know that feeling when you get to the end of the day and it seems like that morning happened two days ago. When you wonder how on earth did all this stuff fit into one day?

That's how I feel about the month of May.

On May 2nd, I had the concert with Paul Pulsipher. This is the one we held at St. Luke's UMC in Hickory, NC (my church), which was originally scheduled for January. We performed the piano duet we co-composed as well as our own original pieces. We also played a couple of duets by Christopher Siu, a Canadian composer.

The concert went well!

I did not feel quite ready. I wanted more time to practice, which was hard to find during the semester, in addition to having a tough April with no energy.

But despite that, it went well. We had about 25 people in attendance, which was decent for the first time doing this type of thing.

I finished giving and grading exams.

I performed three concerts with high school and middle school choruses in the area. I got two of these gigs through word-of-mouth recommendation, which is very nice. I am grateful to those who have passed my name along!

It feels good to be one year out from graduating with my master's and already feeling like I'm getting more cemented into the community.

My energy did come back, so I got some hiking in before the rain came. (Pics below.)

Unfortunately, I also had two stupid falls this month. One from stepping off a curb that was not well-marked and one from tripping on a root while hiking. Thankfully, I was not really injured, just some scrapes and bruises. Both could have been much worse!

Using my herbs came in handy! My elbow got pretty scraped up, but I put some comfrey-infused oil on it, and it healed very quickly. Best of all, my skin healed without itching! (pics below.)

I have also started making good progress on my chamber opera. Composing is the primary focus of summer!

Quick hits (find all details in later sections):

I am accepting students into The Music Hub until the end of May. It's a good deal, if you want to learn piano!

I realized I never put Mountain Heartleaf for woodwind quintet on my website, so it's up now.

I created a quiz titled, "What Kind of New Music Performer are You?" It's a personality quiz, and you can find it on my website.

I have created merch. Pop musicians have merch. Why shouldn't classical musicians?

In The Music Hub

I am super excited to announce that I have moved my piano program over to Skool! It's still The Music Hub; it's just in a different location.

I love how Skool is set up! I think the content is easier to find and the page is cleaner. I like how it looks on my phone just as well as online.

It's super easy to use, and the interface for connecting with the rest of The Music Hub community is simple to navigate.

I have two levels of my beginner program plus additional material currently at an "intermediate" level, and a whole unit on The Blues. New material is being added all the time!

If you've been struggling to learn piano, now's the time to join! You will go from being frustrated to finally having FUN practicing!

You can go through the video lessons at your own pace, plus there are WEEKLY Zoom calls with me so you can ask your questions and get help when you feel stuck!

All this for less than half the cost of weekly private lessons!

I'm so impressed with what my student Jane has accomplished! In just over 6 months, she has gone from not being able to confidently read music in the bass clef to playing familiar folk songs and early intermediate classical pieces with both hands!

In the Concert Hall - May

As I mentioned above, Paul and I had our concert on May 2. I also performed with the school choruses.

I have compiled pieces for a concert program entitled, "A Woman's Place is by the Water" - all compositions by women composers about water, including my own. I am debating whether or not to stick to living composers or also bring in historical composers like Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, whose September (from Das Jahr) is "By the River."

I hope to bring this recital around to various places and even do home concerts. If you're interested in hosting a home concert, contact me!

On the Blog & YouTube

Nothing new this month. Just a bunch of thoughts floating around in my head and a few voice notes on my phone about them.

In the Composition Studio

I'm working on my chamber opera, Mirrors. I began setting the text, and so far, so good! I met with Kirsten Kunkle to get some feedback. There are a couple of sections here and there I need to lower a little, but overall things are going well!

On the Website

I got Mountain Heartleaf, for woodwind quintet, onto the site. You can find it here:

On the Air

I am very behind in the podcast, but it is not forgotten...I'm working on it! I hope to get it back up and running.

I was a guest on a podcast, but I don't know when the episode will come out. I will keep you posted!

For Fun

I created a quiz titled, "What Kind of New Music Performer are You?"

One of the things that has bugged me for a long time is that there is no single definition of "new music" or "contemporary classical music."

While the eclectic nature of today's music world is welcoming to a lot of different styles, it can be hard to explain what you do, and I think a lot of people can get the wrong idea about new music. Or think that there is some sort of "hierarchy" where one style of new music is better than another.

So, to put some levity into this situation and also to make some sense of it, I created this personality quiz to find out what performers are looking to play and why. (I think it is easier to sort performers than composers.)

If you are a performer or conductor of new music of any kind, please try out this quiz! And if you think it is fun and insightful, please share it!

You can find it here: https://heatherniemisavage.com/what-kind-of-new-music-performer-are-you/

Merch

Pop musicians have merch, so why shouldn't classical musicians?

I have created a logo that blends my musician self with my herbalist self and put it on various items.

There are several "collections." The first one is stuff with my logo. Then there's Music Hub stuff and a couple of other things.

If you want to show off being a fan, you can find them here:

Pics

These pics are of my scrape. In order: 1st day, after 4 days, after 1 week. Comfrey-infused oil! Herbs work!

Here are some pics from my hikes:

In order: Sims Pond up along the Blue Ridge Parkway, two pics of Lake James, and one of the bridges crossing a creek on the Fonta Flora Trail around Lake James.

And then there's my "trusted" desk companion.

I have too many piles of papers on my desk and the keyboard next to my desk to really trust a cat up here. I am always a little afraid disaster will ensure. But she joins me anyway and often wants to look out the window. She has also made her way into some merch...Tortoise-shell Cat Pillow | Zazzle

Please forward this email to someone you think might be interested.

If you have performed one of my pieces, please let me know through this link:

Notes from The Music Hub May 25, 2026 Happy Memorial Day! It is Memorial Day in the United States, where I live, and a day we honor the memory of the men and women who have died in service to our country. Right now we are in a conflict with Iran (can we call it a war if Congress never voted to declare it?). And there's a lot of division politically, over this and many other things. But I think we can come together around Memorial Day and what it means. I was moved this past weekend to arrange...
