Heather Niemi Savage Music June 2025 Newsletter

Happy June!

It's been a hot one! Where I live in North Carolina at about 1500ft sea level, it's been in the mid to upper 90s. It is significantly cooler in the mountains! But from what I have heard from my kids, it has been even hotter in Southern New England. I'm sure it has been hotter in other places as well.

This week, I share a recipe for what I'm calling "Healthier Cool-Ade" in my weekly herbal newsletter. it's an iced Hibiscus Tea. If you'd like to know why it is such a great drink for summer - and why it is so healthy - you can sign up for my herbal newsletter here: https://heather-niemi-savage-music.kit.com/14_herbs_musicians_need_now

June has been both a slow and busy month. The first half of the month was slow because my brain was, frankly, mush. It took me a full month to five weeks to feel recovered from school and our trip to the premiere in May.

The second half of the month has picked up quite a bit of speed. I've been composing and attending online business workshops. I have a few things in the work. A small taste of what is coming is a piano course for adults. I offered something sort of like this when I was still in RI, but this will take a little different format. I'm not going to give ALL the details yet, but...

If you have ever dreamed of learning piano or if you want to try again or get a refresher on piano skills you used to have, don't let the 7 Lies Adults Believe About Learning Piano stop you!!! What are those 7 lies, and why are they lies? Go here to get more details: https://heather-niemi-savage-music.kit.com/212246a33c

If you know anyone who could benefit from either of these opportunities, please pass it along!

In the Composition Studio

I am starting a piece for flute, bass clarinet, and piano inspired by the Three Doshas of Ayurvedic Medicine. This will be a consortium commission, led by Carol Shansky (flute) and Michelle Kiec (clarinet.)

I am planning a webinar info session about this piece and what the consortium entails on Friday, August 1, 2025 at 2PM. Email me if you'd like a Zoom invite! And tell your friends, too!

I am also planning to begin recording my Piano Reflections program in July. To get the most up-to-date information and see behind-the-scenes pics and other details about this process, please follow me on social media!

On the Street

I had my 2nd Piano Reflections concert on June 8 at St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock, NC. It went so well. The audience found it very moving. Some told me so. Some just cried. A woman literally had tears streaming down her face. I know that what I am doing is special and important, and my goal is to get this program into more churches.

I am working to get the word out! If you are at a church that would like me to come, please email me!

On the Website

I got the score and video recording of The Night Sky is Always Changing up on the website. It is my most experimental piece thus far - an indeterminate piece with flexible instrumentation. It would serve as a great introduction to this type of music as well as extended techniques, although any extended techniques are optional. The structure of the piece follows a narration of my original poem about the night sky. You can find the score here: https://heatherniemisavage.com/the-night-sky-is-always-changing/

I also wrote about in a blog post here: https://heatherniemisavage.com/2025/06/16/arting-according-to-conviction/

In the Teaching Studio

I have openings for individual students in composition and piano, in-person and online. Contact me for more info.

If you'd like to know more about what's coming in the group piano department, email me OR sign up here: https://heather-niemi-savage-music.kit.com/212246a33c?_gl=1*98i5bt*_gcl_au*MTAwMDU0NzAzMS4xNzQ3MDEzNTcyLjEwNTcwMTA2My4xNzUwODEwMjc5LjE3NTA4MTA5Mzk.

On the Air

I had to take a break from the podcast in June. Partly because I just couldn't. Partly because I am now in a season of looking for new guests to interview over the summer! I have a few tentatively lined up and a new episode scheduled to come out the first week of July.

If you or your ensemble would like to be featured, please apply at this link: Apply to Be Featured on The Musicking Community! - Google Forms

You can listen to the podcast on your favorite streaming platform!

On the Blog & YouTube

I am slowly getting individual pieces from my recital uploaded onto YouTube. Here is Prayer for Peace for solo organ, performed by my friend and classmate, Emma Pullium.

I wrote two blog posts:

In Praise of Old Ladies

I am friendly with two women in their 90s and another woman who is about to be 101 next week! They are all musicians, and I am inspired by their spunk and perseverance!

Arting According to Conviction

This blog post, as mentioned above, is about The Night Sky is Always Changing. In this post, I give more detail about the background of the piece, how it came into being, and why it is special to me.

In the Herb Shop

I am writing short weekly newsletters explaining some of the terms in herbalism and how herbs help with different aspects of health, like pain, anxiety, stress, and more!

I am also getting ready to publish a recipe book called Tasty Herbal Teas and Tisanes sometime this summer. It is very close to done!

This will help me continue to do work that is currently self-funded like 1) hosting my podcast, 2) writing about music, 3) writing music that is not commissioned, and 4) DIY artist residencies. buymeacoffee.com/heatherniemisavage

Please forward this email to someone you think might be interested.

September 2, 2025 A few weeks ago, a friend told me that she broke a finger. That reminded me of a story and inspired this newsletter. Basketball vs. Piano What a broken finger taught me about priorities. One thing many of you may not know about me is that I used to be rather athletic. I was one of the fastest runners in my classes in elementary school, I hit "clean up" in girls' softball when I was 11 and made the town's All-Star team a couple of times and played on my school's basketball...

Happy August! So much has happened since my last monthly digest! It's hard to know where to begin. I just finished my first week at Appalachian State University, where I am teaching a class on fundamentals of music theory and two sections of a music appreciation class. So far, so good! If this week is any indication, the students and I will have a great semester together! I've already received some positive feedback from students, and I feel like a fish in water. It's interesting being able...

August 15, 2025 Hey, I am trying something new with this newsletter, and I'd love to hear from you what you think! I will still send out the monthly digest with the details on all the various projects. But let me know what you think about this one and if I should do it again! Nordic Noir, Poe, and Me I don’t know about you, but towards the end of July I become keenly aware of the days shortening. There’s still a good bit of summer left, but a significant change in the light is a reminder that...
